Is Cognition an Autonomous Subsystem?
نویسنده
چکیده
In standard approaches, cognition is assumed to be a distinct functional module from action and interaction, on the one hand, and motivation, on the other hand. I argue that the apparent possibility of such modularization is itself a consequence of a false underlying presupposition concerning the nature of representation. An alternative model of representation is outlined, and it is shown that action and motivation emerge naturally and necessarily as aspects of one single underlying ontology of the interactive agent.

Robust FDI for FTC Coordination in a Distributed Network System
This paper focuses on the development of a suitable Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) strategy for application to a system of inter-connected and distributed systems, as a basis for a fault-tolerant Network Control System (NCS) problem. The work follows a recent study showing that a hierarchical decentralized control system architecture may be suitable for fault-tolerant control (FTC) of a ne...
متن کاملA Psychophysical Model: An Integrative Approach to Man
This contribution proposes an approach to man which integrates psychological, linguistic and neurobiological perspectives. In addition, precise definitions of psychological terms and a psychophysical structure model are suggested as fundaments for a comprehensive understanding of human experience, thinking and action. A theoretically crucial distinction is made between cognition and intention. ...
متن کاملDistributedmission and Contingency Management for the Darpa Urban Challenge
We present an approach that allows mission and contingency management to be achieved in a distributed and dynamic manner without any central control over multiple software modules. This approach comprises two key elements—a mission management subsystem and a Canonical Software Architecture (CSA) for a planning subsystem. The mission management subsystem works in conjunction with the planning su...
متن کاملA new approach to vision-based unsupervised learning of unexplored indoor environment for autonomous land vehicle navigation
A vision-based approach to unsupervised learning of the indoor environment for autonomous land vehicle (ALV) navigation is proposed. The ALV may, without human's involvement, self-navigate systematically in an unexplored closed environment, collect the information of the environment features, and then build a top-view map of the environment for later planned navigation or other applications. Th...
متن کاملThe Future of Autonomous Decentralized Systems
Over the past fifty years the size of computer applications, as gauged by any reasonable measure, has increased exponentially. In contrast, our cognitive capabilities for understanding have not changed. This discrepancy has forced us to look for more abstract representations of systems to reduce the number of elements we have to consider simultaneously in order to understand the system behavior...
